Stocksbridge swimmers hit the summer nationals

Swimmers from Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club are celebrating a fantastic first half of the year after 4 swimmers qualified for and competed in this summer’s national competitions – an incredible achievement for a small, volunteer-lead club!

Qualification for the summer nationals is based on rankings - the top 24 swimmers in each age group qualify for a place in the British Summer Championships; the next 20 fastest swimmers in each age group qualify for a place in the Swim England, Swim Scotland, or Swim Wales National Summer Meets.

This year, Stocksbridge Pentaqua Swimming Club were thrilled to have one swimmer securing a place in the British Summer Championships, 2 swimmers earning a place in the Swim England National Summer Meet, and one swimmer achieving qualification for the Scottish National Open Championships.

Fin M was selected for 50m freestyle in the British Swimming Summer Championships; Oliver W was selected for 50m freestyle in the Swim England National Summer Meet; Paddy N was selected for 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle in the Swim England National Meet; and Lucy H qualified for 200m breaststroke in the Scottish National Open Championships.

All national events took place during July and August in Sheffield and Aberdeen with Stocksbridge swimmers achieving fantastic results. Fin M came 12th in the British National Championships in the men’s 16 years category for 50m freestyle. In the Swim England National Summer Meet, Oliver W reached the final in the men’s 17 years category for 50m freestyle, finishing 9th overall; and Paddy N reached the final for 200m freestyle in the men’s 13/14 years category, finishing 9th overall.

Commenting on the swimmers’ national achievements, Head Coach David Wright said, “To have 4 of our swimmers qualifying for national events this summer is an absolutely fantastic achievement, particularly as we are a small, volunteer-run club with limited resources. But with the support of our coaches, our swimmers work incredibly hard, and their results are well-deserved.”

Club Chairman Ben Moore also added, “It really is an outstanding achievement for such a small club. Our swimmers work so hard in training and their hard work is definitely paying off. Huge congratulations to our national swimmers for their fantastic results. I look forward to seeing what they achieve next.”
